The first time a client asked me for an EBITDA bridge, I did what most people do: I opened Excel, built a stacked bar chart with an invisible "base" series to fake the floating bars, and spent the next ninety minutes fighting connector lines that wouldn't line up after I resized anything. Waterfall — sometimes called "bridge" — charts became a built-in chart type in Excel and PowerPoint starting with Office 2016, which means if you're on a current Microsoft 365 subscription, you already have it. The tradeoff is that "native" doesn't mean "consulting-ready out of the box." The default styling is closer to a generic Excel chart than an MBB-style bridge, and a few specific behaviors trip people up. That's the part worth walking through carefully.

None of it is hard. All of it is slow, and it's the part that turns a five-minute chart into a ninety-minute slide.
